Reminiscent of another place and time, this cozy yet spacious midcentury cabin has been artfully reimagined by designer Major Jacks while paying homage to its natural flamboyance and rustic character. Feel transported to a private wellness retreat with Bavarian roots, Brazilian rhythms and Zen soul.
House Tour. Perhaps one of the most unique properties in the Sullivan County Catskills, the striking facade of brutalist forms blends in elegant contrast to the natural surroundings. Ascend the stairs and enter the 1950’s Bavarian cabin with original wood floors, paneling, and cheery built-ins.
The sunny living room offers space for flexible furniture placement to cozy up to the wood burning fireplace during cooler months. A dining nook with built-in benches could seat large dinner parties with open views into the newly renovated kitchen with massive skylight, handcrafted cabinets, and gas cooking almost as hot as the signature countertops. Off the kitchen a patio leads to a rustic pizza oven (for adventurous chefs) and space to barbecue and dine al fresco under the stars.
Back inside, while the art may catch your attention, one piece is actually a concealed door that reveals the main floor bathroom with vintage tub and concrete tile floors, echoing the kitchen. On this level, find two bedrooms, one fit for a queen plus furniture, and ample closet space.
Head down the stairs where an eccentric light fixture only hints at what’s to come. On this ground level is the spa-like retreat with a sauna, two glassy bathrooms, luxurious lounge spaces, a meditation room with a spring fed water feature, and a rocky solarium plunge pool that is hard to put into words. Bluestone floors and walls of glass mingle to create a feeling of calm and relaxation. Edu’s Wabi-Sabi Cabin is a distinctive residence and respite for the body and imagination.
The Grounds. Perched on 2.59 secluded acres, the magic begins with wooden mushrooms and carved creatures that guide you up the long driveway. Bathe yourself in wild forest, rocky outcroppings, ponds and unique water features that dot the land.
An elevated platform tucked behind a zen boulder, a stone patio for campfires, and spring fed water sculptures only begin to highlight the many hidden elements to uncover. Nestle into a favorite nook to enjoy morning coffee, stretching, babbling water and fresh air, and discover endless places to explore, places for quiet, and places to play.
For further adventuring, Edu’s Wabi-Sabi Cabin is part of the Black Forest Club, a sought after private community offering residents exclusive access to 1,100 acres of mapped hiking trails, swimming holes, stunning ravines, fishing, and four-season fun.
The Area. Edu's Wabi-Sabi Cabin is tucked away from it all and yet close to conveniences and adventure as you explore the Upper Delaware River Valley. Just minutes from the Kadampa Meditation Center, Homestead School, Circle Park, 10 minutes to Barryville or Eldred for groceries, farmers market, coffee, dining, and libations, and less than 15 minutes from the renowned Forestburgh Playhouse and kayaking adventures on the Rio Reservoir. Port Jervis’ train and amenities are a mere 20-minute drive, and New York City is just 2 hours away by car.
This is Edu’s Wabi-Sabi Cabin, a designer 1950's cottage with a sauna and rocky plunge pool, located in the Catskills foothills, and just 90 miles from NYC.
